Are you a natural born killer?

What is a “Natural Born Killer?” Not sure where I got this quote. but I like to use it to describe my dog, Porter.

This guy is an amazing killer for a dog. Keep in mind from this picture he is more of a lap dog that an attack dog, but when this instincts take over that something is not the way it is supposed to be, he turns into a Natural Born Killer.  He has size, speed, quickness, tactics, agility, strength and an intuition that you could never train into an animal. He has killed countless animals in our yard.  Put simply he is a natural at protecting his turf, you step into his yard and all bets are off, he even can open the door to let himself outside.

I think about how guys in the sports world are natural born killers. You know the type -there are some guys on the football field that were meant to play football. Ndamukong Suh, the former Husker, current Detroit Lion is a great example. I have seen people in the business world that are this way.  God called them to do exactly what they are doing.  I think our challenge in life is to figure out which things we are Natural Born Killers at. The first thing you should do is make sure you doing something you really enjoy.

Get a taste Of Omaha

Today I’m featuring a guest post. There really is some interesting stuff in here – I had no idea that the zoo was so old.

“In 2009, Forbes magazine recognized Omaha as the nation’s ‘Best Bang for the Buck!’ and those who live here agree that it is the ‘Gateway to the West’. Families can find apartments and homes that are great places to raise children in a good neighborhood at a reasonable price.

Pioneers founded Omaha along the old Missouri River in the 1850s. Because of its central location in the United States, it has become one of America’s crossroads, connecting the nation in every direction. Several Fortune 500 and Fortune 1000 are located in Omaha and an abundance of activity draws locals and visitors throughout the year.

Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo is associated with the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums and is widely known for its research and development department. The zoo opened in 1894 with the newest exhibits at the time, such as the largest nocturnal exhibit and indoor swamp and one of the largest indoor rain forests. With attractions like these, it’s not surprising why an average of half a million people flock to the zoo each year.

Aside from the Henry Doorly Zoo, thousands of baseball fans come to Omaha for the College World Series. Not only that, but Omaha and the NCAA are synonymous with one another for baseball fans from the east coast to the west coast. The new Ameritrade Park will host the College World Series and many other sports such as Omaha Nighthawks Football, Creighton University Soccer and many others. So if you’re a sports enthusiast, Omaha might just be the right place for you.

Art lovers everywhere can enjoy a visit to the Joslyn Art Museum. It offers exhibits that reflect the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Children find a fun place to learn at Omaha Children’s Museum that has received recognition from the Association of Science and Technology Museums. And don’t forget “The Old Market” where people can find more art, restaurants, and shopping for those with an expensive taste. Now, for the shopping lovers: Westroads Mall is sure to keep a family entertained for hours. You’ll never grow tired of the shopping opportunities offered in Omaha, including Borsheim’s, the largest jewelry store in the United States, and Nebraska Furniture Mart, the largest furniture store in the country.

You’ll be able to celebrate throughout the year in Omaha, with their vast collection of events. Whether cycling at the weekly Bancroft Street Market, visiting the Farmers Market for fresh produce, or heading to concert at one of the venues, Omaha guarantees to keep you busy. Fairs and festivals attract residents from all over the state, or if you’re not interested in a festival, you can enjoy the 150 miles of trails for those who love biking and recreational activities. For campers, there are numerous campsites throughout the area to break away from the hustle and bustle or you can take a trip downriver on the River City Star Riverboat.

In addition, Holland Performing Arts Center offers programs for those who love dramas, concerts, movies, and many other performances. The Orpheum Theater, established in 1927, brought Broadway and Opera attractions to the city and is a beautiful, historic landmark. Other places to enjoy the performing arts include: the Omaha Community Playhouse, which is the largest community theater in the nation, and the Century Links Center, which draws visitors and locals to enjoy the sounds of nationally-known performers.

Omaha, Nebraska offers a well-balanced array of attractions with scenic beauty thrown into the mix. Affordable apartments in Omaha are available for families of every size and you’ll be able to enjoy a stroll along the Missouri River every morning, if you like. Go hiking or biking for miles at a time. Enjoy fairs, festivals, plays, symphony orchestras, attractions, historic sites and more. Watch major ball games as players compete for the championship. Visit museums, art galleries, and concert halls. No matter what you’re looking for, there is something for the whole family. Omaha is a perfect place to visit, but you might not want to leave after your first experience. So look at some apartments and get there soon!”

Live life inside the box

One of my favorite scriptures is James 1:27:

“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”

The reason that I thought of this is that I am training for an Ironman and read an interesting article about the execution of the race at Active.com.

The last tip is about how you need to race inside a box and the size of the box depends on what leg of the triathlon you are on.  This really ties in well with what I learned in the Four Hour workweek and the above scripture – do not focus on things going on around you that you cannot control. Focus on the box around you that you can control and do not let the things going on in the world pollute your performance. I think this can be applied to your work, family, spiritual or physical life. I ask you to challenge yourself - are you letting yourself be polluted?

Death race

In the last few weeks there have been two races where two people have died in each race.  In the NY triathlon two people died on the swim, a 40 and 64-year-old, both passed from heart attacks.  Two more died in the KC Warrior Dash of heat stroke – they were 28 and 31 years old.

Although I pray for the families of these athletes, these athletes knew the risks.  The fact that the risk of death exist is why we do these things.  I encourage each of you to do something that makes you experience the feeling of fear and work through it. Each time I push myself to do this I grow spiritually, emotionally, intellectually and professionally.  The latest example of this is sport tubing behind a boat.  We do things back there that simply awes onlookers.

Who is the largest trading partner for the US?

I got this info from a buddy of mine in Canada:

I think most of my American friends realize that Canada, not Saudi Arabia, is by far the largest oil supplier to the US.  But here is something you might not be aware of -

In 2010, Canadians were the largest single customer for America goods.  1.5 times larger than Mexico, 2.7 times larger than China, 4.1 times larger than Japan, 5.1 times bigger than either the United Kingdom or Germany.  Put another way, Canada’s purchases from the United States equal the combined purchases of China, Japan, the United Kingdom, and Germany.  Put even another way, for every $1 per capita spent buying US goods in those countries, Canadians spend $50 per capita.  Canadians spent about $7,100 per capita on US goods in 2010, while Americans spent about $885 per capita on buying Canadian goods.

Challange for the week

For the next week, I want you to challenge yourself to not do three things:

  1. No TV at all, none
  2. No news websites
  3. No Reading the newspaper.

I have been following the no news website this whole week and wow! I am getting a lot done. I dont watch a whole lot of TV anyway though.
———————————————————————————————————–

On a separate note, here is a picture of the camera crew for “The Super” suiting up with hazmat suits before we went into a hoarder’s apartment. I was not wearing one of these suits. I guess, I am just used to this kind of thing. Not sure if that is good or bad.

You could be breaking the law but you do not even know it

There was an amazing article that I read in the WSJ about the staggering amount of federal crimes . In fact, there are so many that lawyers cannot even count how many federal crimes Americans could be violating. The reach of the US government has gotten out of control.

No wonder the US is so low on the transparency index. We are not even in the top 20.  America government is much more corrupt than we think.  It’s just that we are so used to it, Americans do not even notice. For those of you that have the ear of someone who is a lawmaker, make sure you send this blog to them.

Colossians 3:23

The NIV (New International Version) version says:

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart,
as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”

I am not sure why this has been coming up lately, but a lot of people have come into my life who simply do not want to work. My kids asked me the other day, “Dad what is the number one thing that makes you mad?” That is easy: I detest people who do not want to work hard or, worst yet, work at all. One great thing about the Midwest is most people are hard workers – not everyone though.

A close friend of mine told me ”the next thing to do is what ever is the hardest thing to get done”  Great advice. This means if you have ten tasks to finish in a day, do the one that takes the most effort first. When I was at MIT this was a different story. We saw kids come come from very affluent backgrounds who wanted to work as little as possible to finish projects.  If you have ever worked on a group project you probably know what I mean.

The bible does not talk about retirement. Take the verse above to heart. No matter what you do, give it your all.
