Easy Button and Communication

May 3rd, 2010

Do not be one of those people that is always looking for the easy button. Please do everyone around you a favor, go above and beyond everything you are asked to do and excel at it. Read Colossians 3:23.  We have a easy button that we pass around at the office for people that just want to pass the buck. Get one of these at Staples and the the next time this happens to you hand it to them. We use it in fun, but it can be a nice reminder to those of us that need a little encouragement to work harder.

Next  over communicate what you are doing, don’t be one one of those people you have to ask what they are doing to find out what they are doing.  I had a client tell me once. “I am sorry I repeat everything back to you it is a character flaw”. Over communication is not character flaw it is a character trait.   OVER COMMUNICATE EVERYTHING.

2002 Toyota Tundra

May 1st, 2010

I know Toyota is getting beat up in the papers a lot lately, but I have had great luck with my  2002 Tundra Which I bought new from Old Mill Toyota. This week the odometer is going to turn over to 212,000 miles. And this is not easy driving. I beat on this of this truck hard. On two occasions I pulled a 12,000 lb trailer 600 miles.  Keep in mind the truck is rated to pull 5,000 lbs.  Other than the battery which I need to replace every 50,000 miles and tires the only thing I had to do was spend $1100 to replace most of the suspension parts because I put a pallet of Retaining wall stones in it. It has no rust either. The only crummy part is that is does not have a very large back seat and the rear doors are access doors, meaning the front doors have to be opened first.  This does not work well when hauling around three kids so I am switching my daily driver to another one of our trucks. And no it is not for sale.

Nebraska is at the top of another list

April 25th, 2010

I found this article interesting. According to  Uhaul, Nebraska has one of the highest growth rates in the country when you compare people moving into the state vs moving out in 2009.  Iowa is also high on the list.

Crazy Smart

April 23rd, 2010

I am not sure how I ended up thinking about this but I did. If you have not read the book Bringing Down The House. I would read it if you have time.  Do not watch the movie(not the Queen Latifa one) the book is much better.  Basically a bunch of brainiacs from MIT used the fact that they can memorize what cards have been played to their advantage in the game of blackjack in Vegas.   These kids are so far past smart, they are Crazy Smart. I met so many people at MIT that were this way. There were guys that could multiply two four digit numbers in their head. I would say  ”quick what is  2456 X 5892 and with out even hesitating they would give me the answer.  It got to the point that when they would do this it was unsettling.   Here is my top ten list of people that I spend time with that are Crazy Smart

1. Sybille Pierce . Sybille is simply the smartest person I know. She can quickly figure things out she has never learned before and on top of that she has crazy access to everything she has ever been told ever. She is MIT smart. I keep telling her she should go to law school. Forget Creighton, she should apply to Stanford. Although, not sure if Mark would move.

2. Steve Filips  I hate to even say this beause this will go right to his head :)   In high school Steve got the best grades and he still does. Current GPA at UNO is 4.0. If Steve does not get a 100% on a test, there was probably an error in grading, the worst part is, he is normally right

3. Luke Paladino. My mother put mirrors in his crib and all kinds of mobiles in his crib when he was a baby. When he was 3 years old, he was playing Mozart on a violin.  Luke is the best also writer I know, he got all the spelling genes I do not have.

4. Wayne Kiltz. Wayne was scary smart. You would talk to him and he would memorize everything you said.  Two years latter he would say. You said, such and such on this date.   This made it very hard to not write everything down you told him. It also makes you a better employee when the guy you are working for remembers things about your job better than you do.

5. Lisa Paladino.  Undergraduate Major in Software Engineering.  with a minor in User Graphical Interface Design and another minor in Mathematics. Who in there right mind gets a minor in mathematics? Not only that she took Calculus at Bunker Hill College. This is the Community College across the street from MIT

6. Paul Ludacka. Put simply I have never seen anyone memorize as many bible versus as Paul.  He can also write upside down and you can read it.

7. Cindy Paladino. In addition to being one of the smartest people I know, she is arguably the hardest worker I have ever met in my entire life, ever period.

8.Roberto Huerta. Roberto is the sub that built Center Street and the 4 story on Second Ave in Des Monies. Don’t let his accent fool you. He can read blue prints with the best off them. He is one of those quite smart guys. You know what I mean, the kind you can never figure out

9. Tammy Hatfield. In my opionion anyone that knows how to work on anything mechanical is smart.  Tammy first blew our minds away when she was plowing one night and there was antifreeze on the floor of the cab of the plow truck and said she was not sure but the heater core was probably out.  We took it in and she was right.

10. Kurtis Kammerer Jr.  33 on his ACT! And he only took it once. I got a 21. Not only that he was on the Class C-2 state champion runner up football team and basketball team, he took state in golf as a Junior. College? Academic Full ride at UNO of Course. Oh and he plays the guitar with the best of them.

John Maxwell says that the person you will be in five years is most influenced by 1. The books you read and 2. the people you associate with.  Who do you associate with? Are they crazy Smart?

up next the 10 hardest working people I know

The New American Dream

April 14th, 2010

I lived in one of the first apartments I had after college for several years before the LL forced me to move by hiring his nephew to clean the hallways instead of me and doubling my rent.  I did not want to buy a house I wanted to rent so I could invest all my money and avoid having to mow the lawn.  I could argue that I would be further ahead if I would have continued to rent instead of putting 40% down on my first house. Yes you read the right. I bought my first house for $35,000 and I put $15,000 down. And that was not borrowed, I saved it.  These day are on the way back Check this article out. Is renting all that bad? I vote no.

4810 Boyd

April 12th, 2010

I have a 11 unit apartment complex listed for sale by a bank that needs to get sold.  The address is 4810 Boyd. There are code violations and it needs about $50,000 to $100,000 in work.  Even with that said it is a very good deal. Please let me know if you are interested.  For the right buyer the bank would be interested in providing some of the financing. Please forward to anyone you think might be interested

Full knee replacement $12,995

April 6th, 2010

I said yesterday there a few people that I agree with nearly everything they say. There is another.  Ernie Goss is a good friend and a Professor at Creighton.  Although I am not exactly what you would consider a Bluejay fan. I really like some of the work that he has done and on top of that he is a triathlete.  Here is his latest post. I think each health care provider should post its price. The problem is which price, the rack rate or the real rate. You decide.

“Fairly high probability of re-defaulting”

April 5th, 2010

There are a few people that I agree with every word they say. One is James Dobson on raising children and other is  Bill Wheato,n a professor I had at MIT.  NPR did an interview with him about what Obama can do fix the housing problem.  If you know me you already know the answer.

Check it out at:

Obama

April 2nd, 2010

Most of you know I am not exactly a fan of Obama. Not the least of which is basically ignoring what our founding fathers did when they formed our country to get away for the Tyranny of the British Government. Here is your chance to vote on the job you think of the job he is doing.

Quotes of the Day

March 30th, 2010

I thought these all good sayings to keep in mind. I got these from George Eynon.   The husband to our bookkeeper Sue

Everything is impossible for those who never try

A goal without a plan is just a dream

You miss 100% of the shots you do not take

The only time success comes before sweat is in the dictionary(I really like this one)

If we were meant to live in the past we would have eyes in the back of our head

Beware of half truths you may get the wrong half

No one can make you inferior without your consent

A shadow falling means there is only light nearby

War does not decide who is right, it decides who is left
