When bad things happen to good people and is it better to be smart or lucky?

I have been thinking a lot about this subject lately. My brother Luke recently gave me the book Outliers by Malcome Gladwell. Do not read the whole book, only read the first 5 chapters. The rest of the book just repeats those five chapters. One of the points in the book he makes is that although we are all in control of how much we work. We are not in control of the timing. Look at the stock market and its peak of 12,000 plus. Just think if you were one of those people and had decided that it was time to retire and take your money out of the stock market and buy treasuries. Not because you were trying to time the market. But because you decided you did not want to work anymore and your financial guy said that you needed as low of risk as possible.

The same goes true for the guy down the street from me that sold the house for $408,000 at the perfect time. He was not trying to time the market he just wanted to move to a different neighborhood because of his stage of life changed. The house is listed for almost 50% less now.

The point of the book is that how well you do has a little to do with how smart you are. But it has more to do with when you are born. In the book he talks about Bill Gates and Steve Jobs and the importance of their birthdates as it relates to their success. I would love to hear some thoughts on this.

Very Interesting. I’ve not had the opportunity to read the book, but seems it may be hinting at numerology and astrology. I’m a business professional whose hobby is Numerology & Astrology. I’ve found working with the general public and combining my hobby and professional life, I’ve welcomed the opportunity to see that both can be very helpful in guiding me with different personalities. It can show a great deal about charcter tendencies, purpose in life, what motivates and where talents may lie. It does not so much reveal a clear fate as a set of probabilities.

the book “Fooled by Randomness” by Nassim Nicholas Taleb. Really good book. I’ll have to

I think that numerology can be especially effective in the hiring process. Know any good books on this subject?
